Jeanne Yang, stylist to the stars and co-owner of Holmes & Yang, believes in three things: pairing denim with diamonds whenever possible, keeping her purse off the floor, and having her fashion line manufactured in New York City. While the former rituals are more personal matters-of-the-heart, the latter is strictly business.

Just six fashion seasons ago, in the fall of ‘09, Katie Holmes and Jeanne Yang launched their eponymous label to a select crowd of Maxfield L.A. customers. It was Holmes’ first foray into design, and Yang’s second time to work on a collection. The actress and stylist joined forces after Holmes had been a client of Yang, and both realized they shared a unique aesthetic vision. “We realized that, as women, it’s difficult to have a uniform. Clothes that will take you to drop off your kid at a carpool, go to work, and then head for cocktails,” says Yang. “The point is beautifully made clothing, classic with a twist… Wearability.”

Their debut collection featured a limited run of luxe basics, following their brand mantra that “it’s about having less clothes, not more.” Soon, the brand would become a permanent fixture on the sales floor at Barney’s New Yorks across the nation.

As any customer that happens by their space at Barney’s, my first impression was one of curious intrigue. The intricate patterns, sturdy materials, and detailed structuring of their garments had my eyes darting about, trying to absorb it all. The price tag also raised an eyebrow, and I was curious to find out more about the line. A few emails and phone calls later, I found myself sitting in Holmes & Yang’s showroom on the top floor of Chelsea Market. Forty-foot-tall brick walls holding ceilings aloft at a neck-bending height set an industrial tone that seemed fitting for such an unapologetically local line of clothing. Patterns hung in the corner flanked by rolls of fabric, and pieces from the spring collection bedecked several clothing racks scattered about the space. Inspiration boards sat propped against a wall, not far away from a determined young intern snipping flawless squares out of swatches of fabric.

Laura Kadamus, Holmes & Yang’s assistant designer, invited me in for a personal tour and even modeled a few pieces for me. The first look she donned was the “Dancer,” the brand’s most popular jacket. Soft buttery suede plays canvas to four large cargo-like pockets, while a drawstring waist ensures that this casual coat can be figure flattering, as well. Any woman could easily wear it multiple times a week. “If you look at your wardrobe, the average person has a rotation of 10-15 items a month,” Yang later explained to me. “So why not just make them great, fantastic pieces?”

Next, Kadamus switched into a snug printed blazer (perfect for work or play) followed by my favorite piece of all, a double-breasted terrycloth blazer that comes in white and navy. What continued to perplex me as my visit came to its end was that the fact that every piece is made in the U.S. In New York City, no less! Living in New York, I have always heard rumors of designers making clothes in the boroughs, but I had never actually seen it. When I asked Yang about this aspect of their business, she stood firm: “It’s 100% a big deal. My mother was a sewing contractor in California; the money she made put me through college,” she says. “The people you meet at our factories are also putting their kids through school. We care about our industry and take care of those people.”

Still eager to see this rarity for myself, I followed Kadamus on a few appointments that day. Walking into a leather factory they use, I was immediately impressed by the stockpile of lavish fabrics and skins lining the shelves. Patterns hung from the ceiling like paper chandeliers. We proceeded further into the shop, toward the sewing stations where I noticed a Dancer jacket lying next to an antique sewing machine. The jacket’s maker was hurriedly buzzing about the space, obviously juggling multiple jobs in preparation for fashion week. She must have been in her mid-40s, and wore a screen-printed New York t-shirt with a few pieces of gold jewelry, including a wedding band. It became clear that this woman was to whom Jeanne had been referring earlier that day: a hard-working everywoman like her mother, trying to make a living off of her trade. The Holmes & Yang line may carry hefty price tags, but seeing the work that is put into each piece makes it worth every penny.

So what does the future hold for this line of sumptuous staples? Could Holmes & Yang create a more affordable line for the masses, as so many high-end fashion companies have done? “It’s definitely a future goal that we strive to reach,” says Yang. “I hope that people realize the conundrum that we face in this industry; that at the end of the day, when you pay a little extra for something, it will last. And we’re able to maintain the quality. Right now, we use some of the best contractors in the world, on the isle of Manhattan, and suit makers in Brooklyn. We don’t want to change that.”

Whether you believe in your mother, your country, or simply in New York City, I think everyone can resonate with the ethos that Holmes & Yang was founded on. Taking care of yourself, while still taking care of others. Buying one well-made coat to last a decade instead of 10 cheaply-made pieces to get you through the fashion season. Quality, not quantity, or, as Yang quoted during our conversation, “Live simply so that others can simply live.”

We are counting down the days until we get to see Don Draper waltz across the small screen again. (For those of you counting, ‘Mad Men’ is set to premiere on AMC on Sunday, March 25 at 9 p.m.)

But it’s not just the series premiere of the ad-men show we’re excited about. On March 1, the latest ‘Mad Men’ collection at Banana Republic will hit store shelves.

Last year, the line’s smattering of polished dresses, smart suits and versatile accessories were snapped up almost immediately by style lovers across North America.

And judging by this sneak peek of the collection, we bet the line will be an equally hot commodity this spring.

Designed by Banana Republic in collaboration with Emmy Award-winning ‘Mad Men’ Costume Designer Janie Bryant, the collection features more than 40 pieces of apparel and jewelry for men and women and embodies the style tenets of the time, including polished sportswear and chic essentials.

“Spring delivers a whole new palette and gave us an excuse to draw from different scenes and wardrobe from the show as inspiration. Janie’s perspective was invaluable in helping us create a collection that is both chic and modern, while remaining true to the aesthetic of the 1960s era,” says Simon Kneen, creative director, Banana Republic.

What do you think of the new line?

Photographer David Roemer has worked with the best of the best, including magazines such as Elle, Marie Claire and Vogue Russia, as well as with supermodels like Karolina Kurkova, Angela Lindvall and Eva Herzigova.

Although the New York-native initially studied psychology and film, he quickly found success as a photographer. Below, he discusses the oddest place he has ever done a shoot, why Victoria’s Secret Angels are so successful and what he thinks about Crystal Renn’s figure.

How did you first get started in photography?
I have always been interested in visual mediums. After working in advertising a few years, I quit to study painting, sculpture and eventually decided to pursue photography. I never assisted anyone and more or less, I taught myself.

Were your parents supportive?
They did support my decision, but were not thrilled. They were worried about the competitive nature of what I was undertaking.

What was the first big shoot that you did?
An ad campaign for Dennis Basso that was 8 pages in every major American magazine in 2006.

What was it like working with Crystal Renn for a Vogue Latino America editorial?
Crystal Renn is one of the most talented models I have ever shot. She is completely engaged, knows every angle, is extremely creative. At this point, she is a muse. She inspires anyone that shoots her and always brings something new. She’s an amazing model, incredible person. I don’t think about the debate over her weight, and I don’t see what the big deal is. She was beautiful at a bigger size, and is beautiful now. As long as she’s happy, it’s her body and that’s what matters. Plus or straight size doesn’t matter to me if they have the right proportion, a diamond face, an incredible personality and they bring amazing energy.

Having worked with Victora’s Secret angels, like Karolina Kurkova and Erin Heatherton. What is it like to shoot a commercial model for an editorial?
To reach both marks in commercial and editorial, they have to have something special, unique and different. I think they have a slight androdgny that sets them apart, the “it” factor that gives them crossover appeal. It seems now that there are less rules, most top editorial girls are doing Victoria’s Secret, though not always vice versa in the editorial market.

Have you ever worked with someone who was a complete diva? How do you handle it?
Yes. It usually gets very ugly. However, I try to be understanding, it is a stressful business that can push people to their physical and emotional limit.

Who do you think are the current supermodels?
Lara Stone, Kate Moss, Anja Rubik and Karlie Kloss.

You shot an editorial for XOJane back in May, what is it like working for an online editorial versus print?
I think blogs are changing the way information is shared. A few years ago you needed to purchase every magazine. Now, everything from every publication is online, sometimes before it even hits the newsstands. I will always love the tangible reality of a printed image.

What is your preferred form of social media?
I am on Facebook, barely. Nothing else.

What’s the strangest location you have ever done a shoot?
A whorehouse in Brazil.

What’s the most surprising thing you have seen on set?
A model’s hair being set on fire.

What music did you listen to on set?
Music is extremely important for every shoot. It depends, normally poppy ’80s hits, disco, or newer hipster rock. I am pretty open musically, it depends on the situation. Sometimes to get everyone in the right mindset we go with the flow, from punk to electro.

How would you describe your personal style?
I like refined casual… relaxed. I normally wear jeans and sweaters, lately have had a thing for leather. My favorite stores are Hollander & Lexer, Odin and Acne.

What is your current inspiration?
Its always the same. Yin and yang, black and white, beauty and ugliness, bad taste and good taste. Finding the tension in every image, that allows it to speak for itself and challenge people.

What other photographers do you admire?
Many that are dead. Guy Bourdin, Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon and Chris Von Wagenheim.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Anyone who knows their Oscars knows that nominees’ fashion plans are strictly top secret until the big day. They seem to be more revealing about their designer undergarments, though.

While it may fit into the too-much-information file, some of the year’s most celebrated actors and directors aren’t afraid to talk about the product placement underneath those tuxes and gowns.

“What I do, because I get chilly, I like to wear long johns. The full one with the trap door in the back,” said a joking George Clooney, a double nominee for his leading role in “The Descendants” and his adapted screenplay for “The Ides of March.”

Nominated “Descendants” director Alexander Payne declined to describe his planned underwear, so Clooney spoke for him.

“Garanimals,” he said, referring to the children’s clothing brand. “Underoos.”

“It’s what I bargain for from the Indian salesman on Orchard Street,” Payne said.

Octavia Spencer, supporting actress nominee for “The Help,” will not be repeating the triple-Spanx approach she took at the Golden Globes.

“I want to be comfortable and look good and have fun,” she said. “So I’m just going to do the normal one here, one there. (Laughs.) Here a Spank, there a Spank, everywhere a Spank-Spank.”

The shaping undergarments have become such a red-carpet staple for women that Spanx introduced a men’s line designed to boost pecs and minimize guts.

Berenice Bejo, who is nominated for her supporting role in “The Artist,” may be planning to work her sex appeal on the red carpet Sunday, where she’ll be accompanied by her husband, nominated director Michel Hazanavicius of “The Artist.”

“You mean Spank or no Spank?” Bejo asked when presented with the underwear inquiry. “I don’t think so, because of the dress I’ll have, I don’t think I’ll wear too much.”

The Academy Awards will be presented Sunday at the Kodak Theatre.
